You’ll Wear Invisalign Most of the Time
Sure, Invisalign clear acrylic aligners are removable, but the truth is, to remain compliant with your treatment plan you will need to wear the trays for at least 22 hours a day. This means you can remove them to eat a meal, clean your teeth, and for special occasions–but you’ll need to put them back on as soon as possible. You see, consistency in wearing your aligners 22 hours a day will yield the fastest results.
Adjusting to Wearing Invisalign Takes Time
The first few days of wearing Invisalign, you should expect two odd things. One, you may have a temporary lisp as your tongue and mouth muscles adjust to speaking properly while the aligners are in place. Two, you may produce a lot of saliva for a few days. Rest assured, your mouth will adjust to wearing Invisalign and the lisp and increased saliva will resolve. You’ll sound like yourself again in a matter of a week or so.
Expect “Tight” Teeth
Invisalign, like traditional braces, uses consistent pressure to move teeth into alignment. When you first put in an Invisalign aligner, it may feel tight. This is expected and as your teeth shift in response to the constant pressure, the aligner will not feel as tight. Some people find that wearing a fresh aligner right before bed allows them to sleep through the “tight” period and wake up with a more comfortable fit.
Brushing Often Helps
Your mouth is cluttered with bacteria! As you can imagine, bacteria can become trapped beneath an Invisalign tray. Brushing after each meal or snack is very important. Never place a clean aligner on dirty teeth. Also, keep a travel oral care kit handy so that when you’re out and about you can pop off to brush your teeth as often as necessary. Ask the dentist for additional tips at your visit, and as always, feel free to ask as many questions as are necessary to feel confident about caring for your teeth and aligners between office visits.
Professional Oversight Matters
Every six weeks or so, you’ll need to visit the dentist for a progress check. These aren’t like those painful tightening appointments patients face with traditional braces. On the contrary, Invisalign aligners do all that work. The progress checks allow us to make sure your treatment is on track.
Invisalign Changes Smiles & Lives
Invisalign therapy, while often shorter than traditional orthodontic treatment, is a long-term investment in oral health and esthetics. Aligners are discreet, so you won’t feel like you’re wearing a “mouthful of metal.” Only you and your dentist need to know you’re using Invisalign.
