Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, known colloquially as laughing gas, is administered through a mask over the nose. The gas is naturally colorless and odorless but typically has a slightly sweet smell added to it.
Nitrous oxide has a long history of safe use during dental treatment. It creates a calming effect throughout procedures, helping patients relax without losing consciousness.
The best part? The effects of nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately after your dental treatment, allowing most patients to drive themselves home safely after an appointment.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
Intravenous Sedation can cause a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide, even potentially leading to sleep. IV sedation can be an effective option for patients who cannot breathe clearly through the nose.
When administering benzodiazepines or other sedative medications into the bloodstream, your dentist will closely monitor your health to ensure your safety throughout the appointment.
Oral Sedation
Benzodiazepines and other sedatives can also be administered orally via pills. We often administer oral sedation in two steps, requiring patients to take the first pill the night before treatment and the second one at least an hour before their appointment.
Oral sedation can be a viable option for patients who are both afraid of needles and unable to breathe nitrous oxide through the nose.
The effects of oral sedation can wear off within a few minutes but can last for quite some time. For these reasons, we recommend patients undergoing oral sedation have someone drive them to and from our office on the day of the procedure.
